Numill Ltd’s Managing Director, Anne Wilson MBE welcomed Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP, Secretary of State for Transport to its Sheffield facility in January.

Anne said ‘It was a great pleasure to be able to welcome him and have the opportunity to speak directly to a government minister and having the chance to discuss issues affecting both global and regional economic growth.’

She explained how the company has been serving UK and export markets since 1969 in major industries of automotive, rail, energy and aerospace with a wide ranging portfolio of clients across the global stage. Anne said ‘It was a pleasure to be able to show the minister work being completed by our team of engineers for Ford Dagenham Engine Plant amongst others including a large export shipment bound for Sweden.’

The Secretary of State commented on his pleasure at being able to see ‘grassroots’ manufacturing taking place in factories such as Numill and understood why Anne and her team are so passionate about it.

Workplace experts ACAS and the Government Equalities Office have launched new guidance to help 8,000 large businesses with 250 + employees abide by new gender pay gap regulations, which come into force in April 2017 and will need to be reported annually, not just on the company’s website, but also a dedicated Government website.

The ACAS guidance includes:

  • How to monitor gender differences in the recruitment balance, starting salaries, promotions, and flexible working requests across all job types and levels in the hierarchy
  • How best to promote family friendly working so women can balance work and parental responsibilities, especially for senior roles
  • Encouraging men to use flexible working so they share the responsibility of balancing work and a family life
Gender pay reporting will affect more than 11 million employees across the UK

The new guidance also includes tips on how to calculate the gender pay gap, including:

  • How to correctly count the number of employees for the gender pay gap calculations
  • How and where a business must publish the data from the gender pay gap
  • The penalties if businesses don’t comply

The International Trade Secretary Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox has advised that 2017 is the ‘Year of Exporting’ and Government is encouraging businesses to seek new markets and seize the demand for British Goods and Services. Exports contribute over £511 billion to the UK’s GDP and the Government has identified opportunities in over 50 countries and a wide range of sectors where the Government believes there is a strong return on investment including advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive.

The new website: looks to assist those companies new to export, selling abroad occasionally and experienced exporters. Companies can also access the Get Seen by International Companies portal, where all UK exhibitors should register as this gives them access to a number of online marketplaces including Amazon and Ebay around the world.

Sponsors’ Alliance (SA)

SA members had reported that Pavilions at major shows at the start of the DIT financial year had been cancelled due to the non-confirmation of the Tradeshow Access Programme. SA had continually been advised that this would be imminent. Trade Associations have been unable to retain space as Organisers had requested payment for large blocks for the Pavilions and without the confirmation of the grants, companies had delayed their decision to participate. On the 22 February 2017, trade associations finally received confirmation of their shows from 1 April until 30 September 2017. This was unacceptably too late for those shows at the beginning of April, one of which was MTA Singapore which the EIA has attended for over 22 years, as companies were unable to ship their products to Asia in that time.

SA were therefore organising an Export Forum on Tuesday 25 April at the House of  Commons in the Terrace Pavilion to raise the profile of the Tradeshow Access Programme amongst MP’s and Ministers. There would be a series of short presentations and a member from each Trade Association is invited to take part in live 2 minute presentations about their company and the benefits of exporting with TAP support within a UK Group. Companies would receive a ticket for the event and the company would appear on all publicity materials for pre and post event marketing. Contact if you would like to take part. Video clips of Pavilions will also be played and there would be some pop up stands of service companies to the industry.

In order for us to make this work we need your help in recruiting MP’s, and Ministers or Lords to attend by sending them a copy of the attached letter (which you can adapt for your own company). It would be a very useful photo opportunity for your contact, lobbying for promoting export for UK SME companies. To find out the contact details of your MP see: Thank you for your assistance.

The International Trade Committee is holding an inquiry into support for exports and investment, following the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee 2016 inquiry into Exports and the role of UKTI. Interested organisations or individuals are invited to submit written evidence to the Committee.

The Government’s long awaited Industrial Strategy was launched on 23 January 2017 see:

The APPMG are holding a seminar on Exporting after Brexit on Thursday 9 March at Portcullis House, London SW1 to discuss the effects of Brexit on British manufacturers, particularly around exporting and importing, cross-border supply chains and international trade, the role of the European customs union and the potential effects of the withdrawal of tariff and non-tariff benefits of EU membership. EIA members who want to attend should contact . The event will bring together parliamentarian, British manufacturers and exporter and experts in international trade.

The new Made Here Now website has been launched and will promote the manufacturing industry to the next generation of engineers. Skills remain in short supply. Last year, the Royal Academy of Engineering estimated that Britain would need 1m new engineers and technicians by 2020 if we are to make the most of our economic opportunities. There is widespread agreement that manufacturing and engineering have an image problem, and that changing this is vital if we are to attract more young people into industry.

This new website promotes manufacturing now, career opportunities and education pathways. See:

METALEX SHOW CASE STUDY - Bangkok, Thailand, 23 – 26 November 2016

Karen Finegold met with Steve Drummond, New South Wales and South East Asia Sales Manager for the 600 Group. He said that in 2014, he had the honour of representing the 600 Group at METALEX. Their aim was to find a distributor for their manufactured products in Thailand, one of the biggest engineering markets in South East Asia. Being the manufacturer of Colchester & Harrison Lathes, with their head office in West Yorkshire, The 600 Group, proudly exhibited a Colchester Triumph VS2500 Lathe on the UK Booth, run and co-ordinated by EIA. This event was an enormous success for their company and it was through their association with the EIA, that 600 were able to find a partner in Thailand, to promote their products.

This year, at METALEX Thailand 2016, they had moved on to display their machine at the ‘Min Sen Machinery’ booth. Thanks to the EIA, Colchester & Harrison Lathes, Pratt Burnerd Chucks, The Clausing range of machine tools and their other, many and varied, products are now being represented by one of Thailand’s best Machine Tool dealers.

Steve wanted to thank Karen personally, for the help and support that the Association have provided to the 600 Group and wished the EIA luck in assisting other UK companies to succeed in the future.

URICA - Driving Access to Funding in the Engineering Sector

Partnered with the EIA, URICA rewrites the rules by providing SMEs with early cash payment of their invoices without any need for debt, security or personal guarantees. They take on all of the risk of non-payment and the responsibility for chasing and collecting debt. At the same time it provides their customers with a strengthened supply chain and an opportunity for extended credit. It is not invoice discounting as that’s just debt by another name. Financed by the Government via the British Business Bank and RSA, URICA was developed by business people for business people.

ZeroFX – URICA is now including the price of FX in the 0.05% per day for all $ and € invoices which means that it’s become at least 1.5% cheaper to export.

120 days – URICA is now able to provide up to 120 days credit terms which opens it up to even more businesses particularly those who are working with the Far East where these terms can be standard.

  • New R&D tax plans
  • BEPs
  • Seed Investment Scheme (SEIS)
  • Annual investment allowance
  • Enterprise Zones (EZ): Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs)
  • Enhanced Capital allowances (ECA) for zero emission goods vehicles

e.mail: web:

New R&D tax plans – David Gauke, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, has launched a new plan to make it easier for small businesses (defined as companies with a turnover of less than £2m and fewer than 50 employees) to claim R&D tax relief. Conceived in response to an HMRC consultation, the two year plan aims to increase take-up of R&D tax relief through raising awareness of the relief among SMEs and making it easier for them to apply

BEPs - MCS Corporate Strategies Ltd studied and responded in full to the recent Government Consultation document on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPs), which proposes legislation in 2016 to regulate the way R&D Tax Credits and Patent Box may be administered and maximized for SME’s and Large Companies.

Seed Investment Scheme (SEIS) made permanent - Two years after establishing the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS), the Government has announced that its success has led to a decision to make it permanent.

The initiative means that SEIS investors can commit up to £150,000 in a single company, and in return receive tax relief of 50 per cent on their income tax for the year the investment is made.

Annual investment allowance: increase to £500,000 for extended temporary period - The measure increases the maximum amount of the annual investment allowance (AIA) to £500,000 from 1 April 2014 for corporation tax (CT) and 6 April 2014 for income tax (IT) to 31 December 2015 after which it was planned to return to £25,000. However, the Chancellor announced in the 2015 Autumn Statement that the investment allowance would be £200,000 from 1 January 2016.

Enterprise Zones (EZ): Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) - Legislation was introduced in Finance Bill 2014 to extend the period in which 100% ECAs are available in EZs by 3 years until 31 March 2020, and to include a power to make future extensions to the duration of ECA schemes by Treasury order. A pilot EZ will also be established in Northern Ireland. ECAs are available to companies investing in qualifying plant and machinery on designated sites within EZ. These changes had effect from Royal Assent to Finance Bill 2014.

Enhanced Capital allowances (ECA) for zero emission goods vehicles - The government will extend the ECA for zero emission goods vehicles to March/April 2018. However, to comply with EU State aid rules the availability of the ECA will be limited to businesses that do not claim the Government’s Plug-In Van Grant. Legislation was in Finance Bill 2015.
